At the insistence of my very patient Children’s Librarian, we had a Monster-themed preschool storytime at the MRC today. She was right–not too scary and the kids loved it!
I had to keep things short, so I stuck with two tried-and-true favorites, Where the Wild Things Are and Go Away Big Green Monster and a new-to-me Mo Willems’ book Leonardo the Terrible Monster. Instead of fingerplay, we did some moving and stretching activities to help the boys get out some energy including a twist on “Goin’ on a Bear Hunt,” a monster-themed “Simon Says” with a puppet, and a monster stand and stretch. Our simple craft was coloring Big Green Monster faces with the help of some fun eyeball stickers. Strong plotting in all three books helped hold the kids’ attention. Every week a little better!
